Collection Highlights
Explore outstanding examples of drawings and watercolors from each of the three contributing institutions, chosen with an eye toward revealing the full spectrum of prevailing 19th-century styles, techniques, and subject matter. Selections range from highly finished presentation drawings aimed at public display, such as Théodore Carulle d'Aligny's Pastorale, with its refined rendering of tonal values in charcoal, to working preparatory drawings, such as Jean Louis André Théodore Gericault's expressive pen-and-ink study of three heads for his renowned painting The Shipwreck of the Medusa.
